We are pleased to introduce our fully online course: PUWER Compliance Management for Warehouse and Logistics Duty Holders.
This online IIRSM-approved course is designed to help duty holders in warehouse and logistics operations understand their ongoing responsibilities for selecting, providing and overseeing work equipment under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
It includes a warehouse risk assessment case study and a warehouse inspection case study, both based on a scissor lift. The first applies the five-step risk assessment process to goods unloading. The second assesses inspection findings, including the lift’s condition, safeguards, controls and supporting records.
PUWER and the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 require employers to manage work equipment risks. Equipment must be suitable, maintained and inspected where required, with adequate information, instruction and training.
Relying on supplier assurances can leave warehouse equipment risks unassessed once machinery enters use. Machinery supply checks under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 do not replace these ongoing duties.
Unsuitable equipment, ineffective guarding or failed isolation can cause serious injuries during operation, cleaning or maintenance. In practice, generic assessments and informal inspections can miss risks created by a warehouse’s layout, traffic and working methods. Unclear responsibilities or incomplete records can also leave defects and corrective actions unresolved.
The training strengthens understanding of ongoing PUWER duties for warehouse and logistics duty holders, with clear expectations for assessment findings, inspection records and corrective actions. For organisations, it supports:
- Clearer responsibility for work equipment after supply and installation
- More consistent equipment selection and approval decisions
- Risk assessments aligned with actual warehouse tasks and operating conditions
- Inspection arrangements, record-keeping and corrective-action follow-up
- Informed oversight of machinery requirements and ongoing PUWER duties
This course is suitable for duty holders responsible for selecting, providing or maintaining work equipment in warehouse and logistics operations, including third-party logistics providers, manufacturing sites with warehouse operations and retail distribution centres. Relevant roles include:
- Warehouse Managers
- Logistics Managers
- Operations Managers
- Plant and Equipment Managers
- Maintenance Managers
- Health and Safety Managers
On completing this course, trainees will:
- Identify the purpose, scope and duty-holder responsibilities of PUWER for warehouse work equipment
- Identify machinery EHSRs and see how supply requirements relate to ongoing duties during equipment use
- Learn how to apply machinery safety principles when selecting or approving equipment for warehouse operations
- Understand the safety requirements work equipment must meet before and during use
- Learn how to carry out and evidence a suitable risk assessment for warehouse work equipment
- Identify assessment gaps and learn how to select precautions for warehouse scissor-lift unloading
- Learn how to establish and maintain PUWER inspection arrangements, including responsibilities, competence and records
- See how inspection requirements apply to a warehouse scissor lift, including recording findings, corrective actions and evidence of follow-up
Do your risk assessments and inspection arrangements reflect how work equipment is actually used in your warehouse? Enrol your warehouse and logistics duty holders on PUWER Compliance Management for Warehouse and Logistics Duty Holders to give them clear, practical guidance on managing their ongoing responsibilities for warehouse work equipment. A consistent approach gives duty holders clearer priorities for equipment selection, assessment and inspection.
