Develop and Assess Safety-Critical Cognitive Skills at Scale with AI Roleplay and Rehearsal

Give people realistic practice in how they notice, interpret, communicate and decide, then assess each attempt against defined criteria and coach them on what to improve.

Human Focus AI Roleplay and Rehearsal provides two complementary types of realistic, AI-powered simulation practice for safety-critical work:

  • AI Roleplay: the learner questions and interacts with an AI persona.
  • AI Rehearsal: the AI presents and questions the learner about an evolving situation.

Each exercise is configured around a scenario, the learner’s role, a clear goal and defined assessment criteria. Learners respond in their own words as the interaction or situation develops.

The learner’s response within the exercise is assessed through an overall result and criterion-level scoring, with coaching feedback showing what they did well and where to improve.

Knowing the Procedure Does Not Ensure a Safe Response

Procedural knowledge is essential for safety-critical work. But knowing what should happen does not show how someone will respond when information is incomplete, risks are emerging or circumstances change.

These are cognitive and non-technical safety skills. They are distinct from demonstrating a physical task such as a manual handling technique.

Safe performance may also depend on whether someone can:

Notice abnormal conditions and emerging risks

Interpret incomplete or conflicting information

Ask effective questions and communicate clearly

Exercise sound judgement

Decide when to stop, seek advice or escalate

Conventional e-learning and knowledge checks can show whether someone understands the procedure. They provide much less opportunity to practise or observe how that knowledge is applied in a realistic situation.

From Knowledge to Applied Performance

Traditional training can establish whether someone understands what they should do. AI Roleplay and Rehearsal add the opportunity to practise applying that knowledge.

The learner works through a realistic exercise, explains their reasoning, makes decisions and receives feedback against defined criteria. They can then apply that feedback when they practise again.

Training Can Also Explore

Training becomes a repeatable process of learning, practice, performance, feedback and improvement rather than course completion alone.

Practise Critical Conversations and Decisions with AI Roleplay and Rehearsal

Learners are not limited to selecting predetermined responses. They interact in their own words, gather and interpret information, explain their reasoning and decide what to do as the exercise develops.

Human Focus provides two complementary ways to structure that practice.

AI Roleplay: Practise the Conversations That Influence Safe Performance

The learner questions an AI persona.

The AI plays a defined persona with a specific role, situation and knowledge base. The learner leads the conversation and decides what to ask, how to follow up and how to move the discussion towards a safe, workable outcome.

AI Roleplay can be used to practise:

Conducting incident investigation and witness interviews

Questioning people during site inspections or contractor checks

Leading control-of-work, task briefing or handover conversations

Challenging unsafe behaviour

Leading difficult supervisory conversations

Checking whether someone is ready to undertake a task

AI Roleplay gives learners structured practice in communication, questioning, listening, judgement and constructive challenge.

AI Rehearsal: Practise Decision-Making in Evolving Situations

The AI questions the learner.

The AI presents a realistic situation and asks what the learner notices, what the information means and what they would do.

As the exercise develops, new information can emerge, conditions can change and assumptions can be challenged. The learner must reassess the situation, explain their reasoning and decide what to do next.

AI Rehearsal can be used to practise:

Responding to maintenance faults or abnormal operating conditions

Assessing changing workplace conditions

Identifying hazards before a task begins

Deciding when to stop, seek advice or escalate

Working through a developing incident or emergency

Explaining and justifying a proposed course of action

AI Rehearsal gives learners structured practice in situational awareness, decision-making, judgement and problem-solving.

Notice
What is happening?

Can the learner recognise important information, abnormalities and warning signs?

Understand
What does it mean?

Can they interpret the information correctly and understand what may be developing?

Decide
What should I do next, and why?

Can they select an appropriate course of action and explain their reasoning?

Making these thought processes explicit creates something that can be practised, assessed and coached.

Assess Performance.
Coach What to Improve.

A standard completion record shows that someone finished a course. AI Roleplay and Rehearsal add structured evidence of how the learner handled a simulated situation.

Each assessment can provide:

01
Overall Performance

A clear overall result or score for the exercise.

02
Criterion-Level Scores

Performance against each of the defined criteria relevant to the task.

03
What Was Done Well

Specific feedback identifying effective behaviours and areas of strong performance.

04
Areas to Develop

Clear coaching feedback showing where the learner should focus next.

Together, these assessment outputs provide more than a right or wrong answer. They can show how the learner approached the situation, including whether they noticed important information, gathered enough information, recognised risk, communicated appropriately, made an appropriate decision and could explain their reasoning.

Performance against the same defined criteria can be compared across repeated attempts, giving learners, managers, trainers and mentors a more focused basis for further development.

Scale Realistic Practice Without Requiring an Expert for Every Simulation

Some of the situations that demand the best judgement are also the situations people encounter least often. AI Roleplay and Rehearsal give organisations a structured way to bring more of those situations into training and apply the same scenario structure and assessment criteria across roles, teams or sites.

Prepare People for Critical Situations Before They Happen

Safety-critical work can involve abnormal, unfamiliar, ambiguous, changing or time-sensitive situations, often with incomplete information or important human interactions.

Procedures remain essential, but situations like these can also require people to interpret what is happening and decide how to respond. Rather than waiting for relevant experience to occur by chance, organisations can identify important situations and build them deliberately into structured simulation practice.

This makes consistent practice possible for situations that may be too rare, dangerous or difficult to reproduce through workplace experience alone.

Focus Expert Time Where Judgement Adds Most Value

AI Roleplay and Rehearsal do not replace expert mentoring or workplace coaching. They gives learners structured practice between those human interactions.

Subject matter experts can focus their time on validating scenarios, discussing higher-risk decisions, providing specialist coaching and relating the exercise to how work is carried out in practice rather than observing every practice attempt.

Turn Expert Knowledge into Repeatable Practice

Some of the most important operational knowledge is difficult to capture fully in a procedure or training manual. Experienced employees may recognise which early warning signs matter, what questions need to be asked and when a situation should trigger challenge, escalation or a stop decision.

AI Roleplay and Rehearsal give organisations a way to incorporate more of that hard-won experience into situations other people can practise, turning important cues, decision points and lessons learned into reusable training scenarios.

Configure AI Roleplay and Rehearsal Around Your Work

AI Roleplay and Rehearsal can be configured around your organisation’s roles, workplace situations, procedures, objectives and assessment criteria.

Each exercise has a defined scenario, learner role and goal. Learners work towards a clear outcome rather than taking part in an open-ended chat, and their response is reviewed against criteria relevant to the exercise.

Human Focus can help set up customer-specific scenarios where required. Approved source material can include procedures, safe systems of work, risk assessments, incident information, internal training, technical documentation, photographs and videos.

The two formats can be configured as follows:

A customer-specific configuration can draw on:
01
The workplace situation or task
02
The learner’s role and goal
03
The AI persona or the way the scenario develops
04
Relevant procedures, guidance and supporting content
05
Assessment criteria and scoring
06

Include Relevant Workplace Expertise

Where useful, a customer-specific scenario can also draw on the knowledge of experienced employees, including critical cues, difficult decision points, information-gathering strategies, common failure traps and lessons learned. Human Focus can help structure this knowledge within the exercise so it reflects both documented procedures and relevant workplace experience.

Assessment and Coaching Support Development Without Determining Competence

AI Roleplay and Rehearsal support practice, coaching and developmental assessment. Results provide evidence of performance within the simulation, but do not by themselves establish that someone is competent or authorised to carry out safety-critical work.

Organisations remain responsible for defining competence requirements, validating scenarios and assessment criteria, providing any necessary practical training and supervision and deciding who is authorised to perform safety-critical work.

People with the appropriate competence should review higher-risk simulations and decide how the results are used.
