Legionella-related diseases are a risk that must be taken seriously by all organisations. A Legionella outbreak can affect many people, causing high temperature or fever, mental confusion, abdominal pain or diarrhoea.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the disease can be fatal with mortality rates as high as 40 to 80%. These mortality rates are for those with weak immune systems, which can drop to 5-10% if proper risk prevention measures are undertaken.
The Legionella awareness training course educates employers, employees and relevant duty holders about the hazard of Legionella bacteria, risk management and infection control.
Legionnaire’s disease is a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria that is present in water droplets in the air. Simply breathing in these water droplets can cause sickness as they can enter into the lungs. Water accidentally entering the lungs while drinking is also possible.
Legionella awareness training educates individuals about Legionella bacteria and prevention of Pontiac fever and Legionnaires’ disease. Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever can cause severe illness and even death. The bacteria that cause these diseases typically breed in man-made water systems and are typically spread through aerosols. Legionella awareness training provides an understanding of how this occurs, the importance of prevention and what must be done to protect the health and safety of anyone that may be affected.
The Legionella online course is a single module with a running time of 25 minutes. This does not account for the time required to complete assessment questions. This is an awareness-level course designed to make users aware of the basic risks of Legionella and how to prevent harm. The course does not cover areas such as how to remove water samples and send them to a lab, or how those samples are tested.
