Why Is this Harness and Lanyard Inspection Course Important?
Some of the most common, and devastating workplace injuries are related to falls from height. In fact, they accounted for some 25% of occupational fatalities over a five-year period, and as much as 8% of non-fatal injuries.
One of the prime causes of such accidents is a failure of equipment, often due to degradation. During it’s lifetime, fall arrest equipment may be exposed to abuse, for instance, from improper use, or excessive loading, which may cause it to fail. It will also see a degree of general wear-and-tear, which may result in edge or surface damage. If equipment is used during a fall, it will become stressed, and lose its effectiveness for future incidents.
Additionally, fallibility is not obvious. Research has demonstrated that there is no clear line between when equipment is safe to use and when it is not. Even a cut as small as 1mm on the edge of a lanyard can result in as much as a 40% loss in strength. So, the safest measure is to scrutinise the equipment we use and scrap any component that we have doubts about.
This safety harness training is designed to provide users with users with the knowledge they require to conduct harness and lanyard inspections. Anyone who is required to conduct safety harness inspections in the workplace must be suitably competent to do so. This includes having the knowledge and experience to understand the equipment and how it works. It means being able to identify the types of faults that lead to automatic fail, and what to do in such scenarios.

The qualification earned by completing this course has a three-year expiry. However, refresher training should be taken more frequently as required to ensure your risks remain suitably controlled.
By law, employers must demonstrate that they are able to suitably control the hazards of the work they undertake. This includes ensuring that all staff are provided adequate information, instruction and training to understand the risks involved in the work they do and how to prevent harm to themselves or others. If staff are required to use fall arrest equipment, they must be trained to understand and use that equipment.
Harness’ and lanyards do have a recommended service life and will expire. This expiration date is provided by the manufacturer and will vary depending on the type of product. Expiration dates will be found in the product’s documentation and possibly written on the product itself.
It’s important to note that the expiration date is a recommendation, but the actual expiration of the product may be impacted by factors such as:
Adverse events: Undue stress caused by a fall can render a product unsafe
Context of use: Method of use or work environment can speed the degradation or increase the likelihood of damage
Incorrect storage: If fall arrest equipment is stored incorrectly it can also impact the expiry date
This Harness and Lanyard inspection course is approximately 90 minutes in length. Note that the actual duration of the course will vary depending on the user’s internet speed, device and the length of time required to complete assessments. The course comprises two modules and one end test.
