We are pleased to introduce our fully online course: Transporting Gas Cylinders Safely.
This online course is designed to help workers who carry gas cylinders by road understand how to check cylinders, secure loads, maintain ventilation and respond safely to transport incidents.
This course provides guidance for workers carrying smaller loads without full driver certification under the Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR). Across six sections, it covers gas cylinder hazards, the legal background, identification, markings and documentation, pre-driving checks, precautions during the journey and responding to incidents and emergencies.
Small-load exemptions can remove some transport requirements, but safety precautions and employer instructions still apply. Where exemptions are misunderstood, employers can be left with unsafe practices for transporting cylinders. Loose or damaged cylinders can cause gas release, fire or serious injury during an otherwise routine journey.
The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009 (CDG 2009) implement the requirements of ADR 2025. The regulations apply in Great Britain, with equivalent legislation in Northern Ireland.
Employers must also address relevant duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 apply to relevant work equipment. British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) Code of Practice 50 supports practical precautions for transporting cylinders.
Employers can use the course to show that workers have received training on their safety duties when transporting cylinders.
This training helps your organisation to:
- Support consistency in cylinder checks, load restraint and vehicle ventilation
- Support compliance with the requirements that apply when transporting gas cylinders
- Help reduce the risk of cylinder damage, gas leaks and unsafe journeys
- Promote emergency actions in line with employer procedures and workers’ training
This course is suitable for employees and sole traders in gas supply, heating, refrigeration, plumbing and welding operations who load, drive or assist with cylinder transport by road, including:
- Welders
- Plumbers
- Gas engineers
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning technicians
- Refrigeration technicians
- Delivery drivers
- Field engineers
- Technicians using company vehicles
By the end of the course, trainees will:
- Recognise the legal duties that apply to carrying gas cylinders by road for work
- Understand how the quantity carried affects transport requirements and when to seek advice about exemptions or driver certification
- Learn how to check labels and markings, identify cylinder contents and recognise documentation requirements
- Understand how to check cylinders, confirm vehicle suitability and secure the load in the correct position
- Learn how to maintain appropriate ventilation when carrying cylinders in enclosed vehicles
- Recognise the safety equipment and personal protective equipment required for the vehicle and load
- Learn how to respond to a suspected gas leak, fire, collision or breakdown
- Understand how to follow journey precautions, monitor the load and report defects, unsafe conditions and incidents
Do the workers who carry cylinders for your business know that a small-load exemption does not remove the need for safe loading and transport?
