We’re pleased to introduce our fully online course: Fire Alarm Testing for Responsible Persons.
The Responsible Person is named in UK fire safety law as personally accountable for fire alarm testing. Running a weekly test is not the same as meeting that duty. In practice, different staff approach testing differently — missing call points, leaving faults unlogged, and recording logbook entries inconsistently. When a fire authority inspector examines the records, duty holders must show exactly what was tested, what was found, and what action was taken.
This IIRSM-approved course gives Responsible Persons a clear, practical routine for carrying out weekly fire alarm tests correctly and consistently. It is designed for those with legal responsibility for fire alarm testing in commercial and mixed-use buildings. An included e-Checklist guides each weekly test and generates a time-stamped digital record on completion.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Building Safety Act 2022, Responsible Persons must ensure that fire detection and alarm systems are maintained in efficient working order. Weekly testing is a core part of that obligation. Accurate, complete records are required to demonstrate compliance during inspections, audits and post-incident reviews.
In practice, testing routines vary between buildings, shifts and staff. Without a shared procedure, call points are missed, fault escalation decisions are inconsistent, and logbook entries are left incomplete. Those gaps leave duty holders unable to demonstrate that testing has been carried out competently. Under the FSO, a Responsible Person who cannot evidence correct, consistent testing faces enforcement action and personal prosecution risk.
This training helps ensure:
- Responsible Persons understand what the weekly test is intended to verify and what each stage requires
- A consistent procedure is followed by everyone carrying out weekly tests, regardless of building or shift
- Staff have clear guidance on how to recognise faults and when escalation to a competent engineer is required
- Logbook entries are complete, accurate and structured for inspection
- Weekly testing routines support the overall maintenance obligations introduced by the BSA and FSO
This training is suitable for:
- Responsible Persons under the FSO, including employers, building owners, landlords, leaseholders and managing agents
- Facilities and premises managers with fire safety duties
- Duty holders responsible for maintaining fire alarm systems in commercial or mixed-use buildings
- Team leaders, site supervisors and on-site staff tasked with carrying out weekly alarm testing
By the end of this course, trainees will understand:
- How fire alarm systems operate and what the weekly user test is designed to verify
- The legal responsibilities of the Responsible Person under the BSA and FSO
- The checks and notifications required before carrying out a weekly test
- How to carry out call-point activation and panel observation safely and consistently
- How to recognise common faults, system warnings and irregularities, and when to escalate to a competent fire alarm engineer
- How to complete logbook entries accurately, including what details must be recorded and how to follow up on outstanding actions
