Develop the knowledge and practical skills to inspect work equipment in line with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
This course combines expert-led theory with hands-on assessment to help users understand PUWER duties and inspection best practice. Learners then apply this knowledge to inspect equipment in their own workplace, with their practical work reviewed by an independent expert.
This course also comes with access to three free e-Checklists. The checklists cover a PUWER risk assessments and inspections and allowing users to create digital reports of these vital processes, recorded for compliance.
While the course supports the development of inspection competence, final determination of a person’s competency under PUWER must be made by their employer.

Users must complete an online theory test and a series of practical assessments to earn their certificate.
Theory Test
The theory test consists of multiple-choice questions based on knowledge learned throughout the course. A score of 80% is required to pass.
The test is entirely online.
Practical Assessments
Users then complete a series of ten practical assessments when they’re ready.
Each assessment covers part of the PUWER inspection procedure and is completed on work equipment chosen by the user. Users have the option to use equipment in their own workplace.
Users record themselves completing each practical assessment
Assessment recordings are submitted to an external PUWER expert via the Human Focus app/system
The expert reviews each assessment recording and confirms the user has met the approved standard
If users don’t meet the required standard the first time, the expert provides feedback on how to improve
Users then attempt the assessment again
Assessment attempts are unlimited within 12 months of starting the course.
Once all practical assessments have been passed, users complete the course.

Customer Feedback
Why is PUWER Inspector Training Important?
Under PUWER, regular inspections of workplace equipment are required to ensure it’s safe for use. These inspections can only be conducted by competent persons – people with the knowledge and skills to do the job safely and in compliance with regulations. Assessing whether competency is adequate is the duty of the employer.
Any failure to meet inspection standards risks workers’ safety and leaves employers vulnerable to legal action from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), including unlimited fines or even criminal prosecution.
PUWER Inspector Training gives users the knowledge and skills to conduct thorough inspections in line with PUWER. Users develop a comprehensive understanding of inspection duties and what they must do to comply with regulations and ensure equipment is safe.
About PUWER Inspector Training
Under PUWER, all work equipment must be inspected regularly by competent persons to ensure it is fit for purpose, in good working order and safe to use. Anyone responsible for carrying out PUWER inspections must be able to demonstrate that they have the necessary competence, as determined by their employer, to conduct thorough checks in compliance with regulations.
Our PUWER Inspector Training integrates theory and practical skills into a single programme. Users develop the knowledge necessary to conduct compliant inspections through eight theory modules before completing a series of hands-on assessments covering each part of the inspection procedure. Each hands-on assessment is performed on work equipment of the user’s choice and evaluated by a PUWER expert. This process allows users to develop a portfolio of evidence and prove their ability to safely inspect equipment in their workplace.
Completing all assessments awards users an IIRSM-accredited certificate and provides expert-verified evidence of their inspection abilities. This combination of IIRSM accreditation and expert verification proves competence in equipment inspection to an approved standard.
