The legionella awareness advanced course is designed to provide duty holders with a general understanding of legionella bacteria and legionnaire’s disease.
The course explores this hazard, how it is created and its risks. It looks at the legal duty to control for Legionella and takes a look at water systems and measures to manage them properly.
Legionella is found naturally in soil and water, where it is generally harmless. But when the bacteria enters man-made water systems – such as cooling towers, whirlpool spas, and drinking and bathing water – it multiplies very quickly. At the this point it becomes a significant health hazard.
Those who are in control of premise have a legal duty to ensure that Legionella bacteria is safely controlled. A failure to do so can result in prosecution.
