An estimated one-third of all road traffic collisions in Britain involve a person who is driving as part of their job (excluding commuting journeys), according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Each of these accidents results in significant costs to the organisations they work for, the employees and anyone else involved in these accidents.
Providing adequate training is an essential risk control in helping to prevent such accidents.
Employers have a legal duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure the safety of workers, as far as is reasonably practicable. This law also applies to work activities on the road in the same way it does to other work activities. Organisations need to manage the risks to drivers as part of their health and safety arrangements.
