Description
Exposure to cleaning chemicals can result in poisoning if it enters the body, damage to the eyes or skin if contact occurs and lung damage if chemicals are inhaled. The consequences can range from mild irritation to incapacitation or death.
Our chemical safety training programme provides cleaners with an understanding of how to reduce the risk of these hazards. It helps to maintain compliance, reduce liability and protect the health and safety of staff and anyone else that may be affected.
Close contact with cleaning materials and agents is the leading cause of work-related dermatitis, according to the Health and Safety Executive. Chemical cleaning agents are also the second largest cause of occupational asthma.
Apart from asthma and dermatitis, chemical agents can cause serious allergic reactions, chemical burns, poisoning and explosions. Mishandling, misuse and improper storage drastically increase the chance of an accident occurring. Every employer has a legal duty to control for these hazards under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations and other general health and safety legislation.

If you are working with cleaning products in a professional setting it is likely that a COSHH assessment must be completed for those cleaning products. The COSHH regulations require employers to assess the risks from hazardous substances and take appropriate precautions.
Cleaning products often contain chemicals that can be harmful if not used properly. The COSHH assessment helps to ensure that they’re being used safely, that workers and other people affected are informed of the risks and that adequate control measures are in place.
In the UK, COSHH training may be mandatory for individuals handling hazardous substances, including cleaning products. It helps them understand health risks and the importance of following control measures to minimise exposure. For specific legal requirements, consult regulatory authorities, occupational health and safety guidelines, or local labour laws.
If cleaners are handling substances with the potential to cause harm, it is likely they must undertake COSHH training. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 any employees who are handling hazardous substances should be provided adequate information, instruction and training. This is to ensure they are aware of the hazards they face, what has been done to protect themselves and others and their role in preventing harm.
This course is designed for individuals who work with or handle hazardous substances in a cleaning capacity. This includes:
