Faults in electrical appliances can cause electric shocks and burns, which can result in severe or fatal injuries to those involved.
HSE guidance on maintaining portable electrical equipment states that failure to maintain portable electrical equipment is a major cause of electrical accidents involving portable equipment.
Training helps those involved in inspection and testing to recognise faults, understand what the checks can and cannot show, when equipment should be taken out of use and where these duties come from.
Your Responsibilities Under Health and Safety Legislation
Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers in Great Britain must, so far as reasonably practicable, ensure the health and safety of all employees. This includes the duty to provide and maintain systems of work that are safe and without risks to health.
These duties are supported by the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, which require electrical systems to be constructed, maintained and used so as to prevent danger, and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), which require work equipment to be suitable, properly maintained and used by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training.
This course supports these duties by providing trainees with a structured understanding of how portable electrical equipment is visually inspected, tested and documented as part of an employer’s wider maintenance arrangements.
About This PAT Testing Course
This online PAT testing course provides supporting knowledge of the visual inspection and testing process for portable electrical equipment.
It covers test procedures, results and record-keeping, together with relevant legal duties and guidance. Completion alone does not establish competence to carry out workplace inspection or testing. Employers must consider the person’s training, knowledge, practical experience, ability to use the relevant test equipment and interpret results and any supervision required.
How This Course Supports Your Organisation
This course helps organisations:
- Give staff a shared understanding of portable appliance inspection and testing
- Explain how PAT fits into wider, risk-based equipment maintenance arrangements
- Improve consistency in how inspections, tests and results are recorded
- Reinforce competence requirements and when further experience or supervision may be needed
- Maintain clearer digital records using the included PAT e-Checklist
Together with workplace procedures and appropriate supervision, the course supports a more consistent approach to PAT across the organisation.
