Behavioural based safety (BBS) programmes can deliver real improvements in routine personal safety — but research and major-accident experience also point to important blind spots. If your BBS programme is focused mainly on observable frontline behaviour, you may be missing the wider pressures, management decisions and system conditions that shape risk. That includes the pathways that can lead to serious injuries, fatalities and major events.

In this free recorded webinar, human factors specialist Ian Pemberton shows how a human factors-led approach in BBS programmes can help you uncover hidden influences on risk and generate deeper insight. The approach is grounded in evidence and informed by methods used in high-reliability organisations around the world.

If you want to take your BBS approach to the next level — and extend your learning into the risks that matter most — this continuing professional development (CPD) webinar session is for you.

About this webinar

Behavioural safety programmes have delivered real value for many organisations. Research and industry experience show they can reduce unsafe behaviours, increase engagement and create more conversations about safety. But the evidence also points to clear boundaries around what these programmes can achieve — particularly when it comes to major hazards and serious risk.

That leads to a critical question:

Are the behaviours you can observe and measure the same things that will tell you whether your most serious risks are under control?

Research and major-accident experience show that they are not necessarily the same. The causes of personal-safety incidents can differ from the precursors to major accidents, which is why strong performance on routine behavioural measures should not be assumed to mean that serious risk is equally well controlled.

The behaviours most easily captured by a traditional behavioural safety programme tend to be visible, frequent and individual. That makes them practical to observe, discuss and trend.

But serious injuries, fatalities and major events often develop through more complex pathways. These can involve changing conditions, competing priorities, judgement, communication, workarounds and decisions made under pressure.

That creates a built-in blind spot.

This recorded webinar shows you how to widen your lens — beyond observable behaviour and into the conditions, pressures and interactions that shape how people actually perform.

You’ll learn how a human factors approach can help you:

  • uncover risks and influences that traditional behavioural observation can miss;
  • extend learning beyond routine personal safety into serious incident and major-event risk;
  • understand why people behave as they do, rather than simply identifying what they did;
  • identify new opportunities for practical safety improvement.

If your BBS programme has delivered results, but you are looking for the next step-change in learning and safety performance, this free CPD webinar recording will show you how a human factors-led approach can help you achieve it.

Who This Recorded Webinar is For

If you are frustrated or concerned about any of the following, this webinar recording will help:

  • A feeling that you are not really learning from experience — recurring incidents despite previous behavioural safety interventions.
  • An unease that you remain vulnerable to serious incidents — despite significant investment in behavioural safety.
  • Frustration at the lack of meaningful safety improvement — lots of observations and reports, but limited insight into how work is really being done, particularly in higher-risk tasks.

If you are running, reviewing or considering a BBS programme — and want to overcome these common concerns — this recorded webinar provides a concise, evidence-based briefing.

You’ll learn how a human factors-led approach can help you look beyond observable behaviour, understand the wider conditions shaping performance, and extend learning into serious-incident and major-event risk.

Whether you already have a BBS programme or are considering one, this free recorded webinar will help you recognise where traditional behavioural safety reaches its limits — and how a human factors-led approach can extend your learning, widen your view of risk and take your programme to the next level.

About the webinar presenter

This webinar was presented by Ian Pemberton, a Chartered Ergonomist and Human Factors Specialist.  Ian has more than 35 years’ experience helping organisations improve safety performance. His work focuses on how people really behave and make decisions in complex, high-risk environments — and how human factors can be used to design safer, more resilient systems of work.
