Why Is Environmental Awareness Training Important?

Organisations have an important role in reducing their environmental impact. They also may be subject to legal duties relating to waste, pollution, resource use and other environmental risks.

The UK is already witnessing the repercussions of climate change including such as heatwaves and record-setting temperatures. The government has set legally binding climate targets, including reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Achieving these trarget will require action across the economy.

Investing in sustainable production systems also makes good business sense. Sustainable practices can improve resource efficiency, reduce operating costs and support long-term business resilience.

Our Environmental Awareness Training programmes educate participants on environmental issues and how their actions impact the environment. Participants learn practical strategies to reduce carbon footprints and minimise waste.

The courses help organisations raise awareness of environmental requirements and good practice. Learners will learn about their role in reducing the risk of environmental incidents and supporting compliance.

Are You Aware of Your Responsibilities?

Organisations must identify and comply with the environmental legal requirements that apply to their activities and location.

In England and Wales, section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 places a duty of care on anyone who produces, carries, keeps, treats, disposes of or otherwise controls controlled waste. This includes taking reasonable steps to prevent its unlawful handling or escape and transferring it only to an authorised person with an adequate written description.

Operators of regulated facilities may also need an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016, unless a relevant exemption applies.

Depending on their activities, location and environmental risks, organisations may need to:

  • Prevent pollution and respond appropriately to spills or releases
  • Store, manage and transfer waste safely
  • Use authorised waste carriers and maintain required records
  • Obtain and comply with environmental permits or consents
  • Control emissions, discharges and other environmental impacts
  • Ensure employees follow relevant environmental procedures

The Environment Act 2021 also provides a broader framework for environmental protection, including waste and resource efficiency, air quality, water and biodiversity.

Meeting these responsibilities requires that people in your organisation understand what environmental protection means, where environmental risks come from, and what actions are expected of them.

About Our Environmental Awareness Courses

Our online Environmental Awareness Training courses are designed for office and industrial workplaces, with separate options for general staff and managers:

All four courses explain key environmental challenges, why sustainable business practices matter and how individuals can help reduce waste, conserve resources and improve environmental performance.

The two manager courses additionally provide awareness of the compliance responsibilities managers may have. This includes legal obligations, voluntary commitments and supply chain expectations, as well as the types of arrangements and evidence organisations may use to demonstrate compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Environmental awareness refers to understanding the natural world and the impact of human activities on it. This understanding can encourage more responsible and sustainable decisions at work.

Economic activity is a leading cause of climate change and environmental damage. Consumers now expect companies to act and reduce this damage. Governments are also introducing policies and targets intended to reduce emissions and support international efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

The importance of environmental protection training in this context can not be overstated. It helps develop an appreciation and understanding of sustainability in the organisation. It also empowers employees to engage in green initiatives to help improve environmental performance and the organisation’s reputation.

Our environmental awareness training courses are suitable for people at all levels, including employees, supervisors, managers and business owners.

This course covers environmental awareness only. It does not cover occupational health and safety. Although the term Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) is often used as an umbrella term, environmental compliance and health and safety compliance are separate areas under UK law and require appropriate training in each.

If you’re looking for broader awareness of environment, health and safety, you can take this course alongside appropriate health and safety training. For general Health and Safety awareness, our IOSH-approved e-learning programmes are designed to provide the right level of knowledge to every role.
