Description
Falling from heights is one of the leading causes of workplace accidents. To minimise risks to a reasonably practicable level, it’s important to follow safety procedures and use proper equipment.
Working at height course prepares workers to perform their tasks safely and responsibly at heights. It provides them with essential knowledge and skills to keep themselves and others safe when conducting work at heights, including planning, equipment selection and safe work practices.
Falls from height are the most common cause of workplace fatalities, resulting in 40 deaths in 2022/23, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Over 45,000 workers were also injured due to fall incidents during the same period.
Given the potential harm, any work at height must be properly planned, supervised and carried out by competent people. These are legal obligations enforced by the HSE to protect employers, workers and members of the public from the significant risks of work at height.
Workers also have a legal duty to take reasonable care of themselves when performing tasks at height. They can only do this with sufficient experience, skills and training.
Our work at height awareness training supports safer working and helps employers and employees fulfil their legal duties. Trainees understand the risks of working at heights and develop awareness of the key safety principles. This knowledge enables them to work more confidently, safely and responsibly at heights.
The Working at Height Regulations 2005 outline the legal duties employers have to ensure the safety of workers and the general public.
These duties include:
The HSE defines competence as the right combination of skills, knowledge and experience. The necessary depth of these qualities scales with the risk level of the work.
HSE guidance states that for certain low-risk tasks workers can achieve the required level of competence through training alone. More complex jobs may require further training in addition to considerable experience, knowledge and skills, however.
Workers also have a duty to protect themselves and others when operating at height. They should be aware of safe working procedures and be able to recognise when conditions are hazardous, equipment is insufficient or risks are unaccounted for. Our training course helps workers fulfil these duties.
Failure to comply with working at height regulations puts workers at significant risk and may result in serious consequences, including penalties, legal action or even imprisonment.

Work at height poses significant risks, such as falls, falling objects and structural collapses, making it one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities and injuries. Without proper safety measures, workers are vulnerable to slips, trips, and losing balance.
Effective risk assessment, proper equipment use, adequate training and comprehensive safety protocols are crucial to minimise these risks and ensure the safety of workers at height.

Workers must use fall protection equipment when conducting work at a height of 2 metres or more.
