Course Outline

This course contains the following sections:

Explores the key roles and duties fire wardens have in minimising fire risks in the workplace. Fire hazards can have a devastating effect on businesses and their employees, leading to the loss of lives and property damage.

Explores what is required for a fire to start – the fire triangle. The section looks at different situations in a workplace which make a fire likely and methods to prevent them from occurring.

Provides trainees with an understanding of common source of ignition caused by work equipment. It goes over types of equipment, the problems associated with them, and how to avoid the fire risks they present.

Explores common sources of fuel – materials that may burn to cause fires in the workplace. It also looks at the fire classification system and the associated substances.

Explores unsafe work practices that may start a fire, and encourages safe behaviour in the workplace, including prohibiting smoking, permits to work and housekeeping.

Explores the role fire wardens have in inspecting and using fire safety equipment and how to ensure it’s in good working order. It also discusses issues that may arise due to improper maintenance, firefighting equipment or not having proper procedures for routine check-ups.

Explores the role of fire wardens in identifying and implementing vital security measures that play a key role in fire safety and minimising the risks of deliberate fire setting.

Explores fire evacuation arrangements, the use of drills and what actionable steps must be undertaken to evacuate in an emergency.

Provides trainees with an understanding of fire drills, their purpose and how they help in reporting any issues and then implementing vital controls to minimise those issues.

Gives users an understanding of how to implement plans to effectively assist anyone with a disability during a fire emergency.

Provides trainees with an understanding of a fire warden’s roles in extinguishing small fires before they pose a significant risk to buildings or people.

Why This Course is Important

Out of approximately 316 fire-related deaths, most casualties were due to the inhalation of toxic gasses that the fire produces, in the latest year that data is available. About a quarter of the fire-related fatalities were due to burns, according to Intelligent Security & Fire.

Any occurrence of a fire can be potentially devastating. In certain cases, neither the people nor the organisation can recover from the damages or the psychological effects of a fire.

Prioritising the highest risk control measures for a fire is, therefore, a critical task for fire wardens and fire marshals. It is their responsibility to ensure that suitable controls are in place and working to prevent a fire, and – should a fire occur – that the organisation and staff can respond appropriately to minimise the loss of life and property.

About Fire Warden Training

A fire occurring within any building can be dangerous and devastating. To avoid casualties or damages, fire safety laws and regulations are in place.

The fire warden’s duty is to ensure that these are met and followed to the letter. Wardens also consider the mitigation of additional fire safety risks within an organisation.

What is Fire Warden Training?

Fire warden training prepares designated employees with the knowledge and skills required to prevent and respond to fires in the workplace.

Fire warden training covers topics such as: the role of fire wardens, how fires start and methods of prevention, fire safety equipment, fire drills, the principles of evacuation and how to extinguish fires. Providing an appropriate level of training will mean employees are able to undertake the duties of a fire warden effectively.

The responsibilities of fire wardens are:

1. Preventing Fires

Fire Wardens must monitor fire hazards and work to prevent fires from happening in the first place through regular checks, inspections and assisting fire risk assessments.

2. Evacuating Personnel in a Fire Emergency

All personnel should be evacuated from the premises in a fire emergency through proper fire exits. Fire wardens have to aid any workers, visitors and anyone unfamiliar with the evacuation routes.

3. Extinguishing Fires When Possible

Trained fire wardens can fight small fires to prevent their spread or create safe evacuation routes.

Your Responsibilities Regarding Fire Warden Training

If you are an employer, you have a legal responsibility to ensure the safety of any employees, contractors or visitors on site. This must include providing an adequate level of fire safety training, as well as appointing fire wardens. Some areas that training must cover include:

  1. Identification and assessment of risks: A primary duty of fire wardens is the conducting of fire risk assessments. These should be carried out to identify potential hazards. After completion, steps must be taken to eliminate or minimise the risk of fire.
  2. Fire safety training provision: Fire wardens must ensure that all staff are adequately trained on fire safety. This includes understanding the risks associated with fires, knowing how to prevent fires and understanding how to respond in the event of a fire.
  3. Fire safety equipment: Fire wardens should have a knowledge of fire safety equipment on site. This includes understanding its location and function. Wardens should also be able to operate firefighting tools if necessary and determine when equipment needs repair or replacement.
  4. Drills and evacuation: Fire wardens must not only work to prevent fires, but ensure everyone is equipped to respond appropriately should a fire occur. This means the regular scheduling and coordination of fire drills and ensuring evacuation procedures are clear and well communicated.

This online fire warden training course is designed to ensure fire wardens understand these duties. Having a clearly designated and competent individual who understands the responsibilities of a fire warden will go far in ensuring your organisation is protected from fire.

Frequently Asked Question

Fire warden and fire marshal are similar roles, but their duties and responsibilities are not exactly the same when it comes to fire safety.

A fire warden is an employee designated by the employer to assist with fire safety and emergency response procedures. Some primary duties of a fire warden include conducting fire safety inspections, reporting any concerns to the management and assisting with implementing fire safety plans and evacuation procedures.

Fire marshal is a more senior role and is usually held by a manager or a trained fire professional. Their primary duties include conducting fire risk assessments, developing fire safety plans and supervising employee fire safety training and fire drills.

This online fire warden training course takes around 30 minutes to complete. However, for an in-depth understanding of this role, we recommend you explore our other fire related course content, including Fire Risk Assessment training.

Once you have completed the fire warden training, you will receive a fire warden certification that needs to be renewed with refresher training every three years.

Employers must appoint a suitable number of responsible persons to act as fire wardens for their workplace. Anyone tasked with fire warden duties is required to complete sufficient training.
